Travelers Dispossessed is a story of love, fate, and migration. Many such stories have played out since the beginning of time. The characters in this story are based upon real people, some famous and others barely known. The story takes place in Ireland and France during the turbulent years of the early Irish independence movement and the Franco-Prussian War.

What a pleasure it was to read Mary-Michael’s manuscript! It’s rare that I get to approach such a well-researched piece of work, and European history is one of my favorite subjects. The depth of her research is clearly one of the strongest aspects of Travelers Dispossessed, but I would also add that the dialogue feels natural and flows well throughout the manuscript. Each character seems to have a clear idea of what they want to say and how they want to say it. Mary-Michael has created a vibrant cast of characters and the main four stand out as the true gems of the story.

Stories of human migration have entertained people for millennia. Travelers Dispossessed is one of those books that takes the reader on a journey with a group of characters you care about and cheer for. Author Mary-Michael Billings transports us to the late 19th century where we follow Bridget and Patrick in Ireland and trace the lives of Johanna and Henri through France and Belgium. What makes these stories so compelling is Billings’ attention to both physical and historical detail. The reader has a chance to live in the past and face the historical and human problems experienced by the characters. At a time when climate change, famine and war have caused similar migrations in our world, these stories are particularly relevant. Like the characters in the novel, our hope and survival as a species depends on our resourcefulness, kindness, and love. At some level we are all dispossessed travelers moving through uncharted territory. Stories like these map our destiny.
